Germaine Dawson

Germaine Lance Dawson, Denton. He was a four-year football letterman for the Mean Green from 2005 to 2008, playing linebacker and safety in 31 games. He was scheduled to graduate in May with an applied arts and sciences degree.

Celeste Farmer

Celeste Mary Gilheany Farmer, Denton. She attended Tyler Junior College and Tarleton State University before coming to UNT in the spring to work on another degree. She was active in Austin organizations for the homeless and animal welfare and was an accomplished horsewoman, cross-country runner and mountain biker.

Col. Richard Scott

Col. Richard Esker ‘Jack’ Scott, Vacaville, Calif., professor of aerospace studies and commander of the Air Force ROTC at North Texas from 1968 to 1973, died Jan. 31. He directed the Flight Instruction Program for senior cadets and taught freshman and sophomore training classes. He also attended the university from 1969 to 1976 and taught courses in political science. He flew B-24 bombers over Germany during World War II and, after a brief airline job, rejoined the Air Force. His 30-year Air Force career included several years in the special operations field. After retiring, he worked as an instructor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Denton and for various area junior colleges.

Jonathan Conner

Jonathan David Conner (’97), Gainesville. He served in the U.S. Army 10th Engineer Battalion from 1988 to 1991 and began a career in telecom sales after graduating from UNT. He was a software sales executive with Valtech Technologies. He loved to hunt, shoot sporting clay and ride his Harley, and he was an accomplished musician.

Todd Isern

Todd William Isern (’97, ’00 M.Ed.), Irving. He was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and taught in the Lewisville, Denton and Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISDs.

Margaret Bowers

Margaret Elizabeth May Bowers ('33), Incline Village, Nev. She completed her master’s degree in elementary education at Southwest Texas State University and taught first grade in Kyle. She was active in the University Faculty Wives Club and the American Association of University Women.

Velma McWhirter

Velma Irene Smyrl McWhirter (’36, ’41 M.S.), Wylie. She taught home economics at Cooper High School in Woodrow until retirement. Her thesis for her master’s degree in home economics was a study of the housing conditions of 108 farm families in Wellman.

Lavoyce McCurdy

Lavoyce Boswell McCurdy (’40, ’61 M.S.), Corsicana. During her 36 years of teaching in Barry and Corsicana, she taught high school and fifth and sixth grades. She also taught Sunday school at Barry Baptist Church, where she was a member for 87 years. She met her husband, the late Carroll C. ‘Pinkie’ McCurdy (’40), at North Texas.
