Robert Sherman

Robert C. Sherman (’46 M.S.), Denton, Professor Emeritus of biology who worked at North Texas from 1946 to 1978, died May 28. Sherman, considered a pioneer in conservation education, began work on a master’s degree in field biology at North Texas in 1940 under J.K.G. Silvey, who became his mentor and colleague. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Sherman joined North Texas as assistant professor of education and was principal of the demonstration school. He left in 1948 to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri and returned to North Texas in 1950 to join the biology and chemistry faculty. For many summers he taught a field laboratory in conservation education and in 1955 published Life and Death of the Soil. He served as chair of the Division of Science, associate dean of the graduate school and director of research and academic grants. He also was a life member of the President’s Council and a longtime supporter of UNT. His first wife was the late Elizabeth Lura Pinkerton Sherman (’46 M.A.)

Aaron Wuensch

Aaron Wuensch (’08), Denton. He was a master’s student in economics and an avid athlete. He received the Faculty of the Department of Economics Scholarship, the department’s top honor for graduate students.

Alex Casildo

Alex Casildo (’09), Mount Vernon. He graduated in May with a degree in real estate and a minor in Spanish. He was a member of Lambda Theta Phi fraternity.

Mabel Ferguson

Mabel Marie Carpino Ferguson, Denton, registered nurse at the health center from 1968 to 1990, died April 27. She and her husband traveled around the world during his Air Force career and moved to Denton in 1965. She worked at Flow Hospital in addition to the health center.

Germaine Dawson

Germaine Lance Dawson, Denton. He was a four-year football letterman for the Mean Green from 2005 to 2008, playing linebacker and safety in 31 games. He was scheduled to graduate in May with an applied arts and sciences degree.

Celeste Farmer

Celeste Mary Gilheany Farmer, Denton. She attended Tyler Junior College and Tarleton State University before coming to UNT in the spring to work on another degree. She was active in Austin organizations for the homeless and animal welfare and was an accomplished horsewoman, cross-country runner and mountain biker.
