Edward V. Smith III (‘60), Dallas :: He was a probate lawyer for 50 years, serving as chair of the probate section of the Dallas Bar and a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the probate sections of both the Dallas Bar and the State Bar of Texas, and received the Professionalism Award from the Dallas Bar and the Texas Center for Legal Ethics. He also served as president of the UNT Alumni Association, founder and former chair of the UNT Foundation, chair of the Professional Development Institute, and a member of the McConnell Society and 1890 Society. He served on UNT’s Board of Regents from 1978 to 1979 and was named a Distinguished Alumni in 1992. With his wife Nikki DeShazo, Smith created the Edward V. Smith, III Scholarship in American Government; the Nikki DeShazo Smith and Edward V. Smith, III Endowed Scholarship; and the Jack C. Smith Memorial Scholarship in Insurance. As a student at UNT, he was president of his class, attorney general of the student body, vice president of the student body, president of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and president of the Blue Key Honor Society.
