Raymond Miles (’54, ’58 M.B.A.), Albany, Calif., While he studied for his journalism degree at North Texas, he worked nights for the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad — where he observed how the workers were supervised, eventually leading him to launch the strategic management concept. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, earned an M.B.A. at UNT and a Ph.D. at Stanford, and researched strategic management as a professor at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. He co-wrote the breakthrough book, Organizational Strategy, Structure and Process, in 1978. In the 1980s, he served as Haas’ dean, expanding the faculty and supporting new programs.
