Luther ‘Bugs’ Fambro (’50), Breckenridge :: After serving in the Army Air Corps as a radio operator, first on a B-17 and then on a B-25, he enrolled at North Texas the first summer term of 1946. While participating in intramural sports, he was offered an athletic scholarship for football and track. He also played freshman basketball. He lettered four years in football, being named to the All Gulf Coast Conference team, and four years in track, receiving numerous awards and medals. He participated in the Texas Relays, Kansas Relays, Drake Relays and conference meets, consistently entering the broad jump, high jump, triple jump, low hurdles and pole vault events. In April 1950, he was fifth in the nation in the broad jump. He was named to Who’s Who and was sophomore class president and a member of the T Club, the Talons and the Blue Key National Honorary Fraternity. He was inducted into the UNT Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998. He coached at Jacksboro, Arlington and Highland Park schools and later was executive vice president of C&C Manufacturing and Distributing and president of Contract Packaging Associates Inc. in Dallas. In 1971, he returned to the family ranching business in Strawn. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Acker Fambro (’50).
