Sweet classes

I was so pleased to see the nice letter and good picture of Sweet Estes (winter 2010). My sister and I rode at her stable on the far west end of Maple Street, which was a dirt street at that time. Perhaps we were in one of Sweet’s first classes — 1944 or 1945. I can remember the names of 14 horses: Jitters, Indigo, Choo-Choo, Pat, etc. We rode on the dirt streets and country roads out west and south of town. The golf course was being built, and we rode around that.

Her mother was on hand when Sweet had to be away. Mrs. Estes was a delightful lady and showed us how to “show the horses who was boss,” thus taking away our fear. I sure do hope Sweet is put in the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame. She knew everything about horses. I asked her one time how to keep a horse from running away, and she said, “Don’t let him.” And that’s all she needed to say.
