David Portillo (M.M.), Hoboken, New Jersey, was awarded the Medal of Excellence by the nonprofit Sphinx Organization, which recognizes classical Black and Latinx artists who demonstrate artistic excellence, an outstanding work ethic and a commitment to leadership and their communities. A tenor, he has performed at opera houses including The Metropolitan Opera, Washington National, Houston Grand and Dallas operas, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Glyndebourne Festival, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Australia at the Sydney Opera House and the Wiener Staatsoper.
