Howard Johnson

A culturally aware education is necessary for everyone who's going to participate intelligently and responsibly in a multicultural society that surrounds us, rather than a mythological and sheltered subculture not truly representative of our nation as a whole. A university in pursuit of academic excellence will not succeed unless it draws upon the rich diversity of human experiences and expressions. The great river of knowledge loses its richness if diverse intellectual and cultural streams do not flow into it.
— UNT Provost Howard Johnson

2003 —John Price ('81), executive director of the UNT Dallas Campus, is named the first African American vice provost. Howard Johnson becomes the first African American provost and full vice president — vice president for academic affairs.
