University awards were presented at the annual Alumni Awards Dinner April 12. The event honors alumni and others who have provided service and support to the university as well as alumni who have achieved prominence in their fields. This year's honorees were:
Distinguished
Alumnus/Alumna Award
The university's most prestigious award for alumni, given to individuals who have achieved distinction in their professions and made significant contributions to society, therefore bringing credit to UNT
 Jerry Durant
(
'69) of Weatherford, auto dealer and founder of the Jerry Durant Family of Dealerships. The more than 30-year-old dealership is one of the largest in North Texas. Durant is a member of the UNT President's Council, a member of the board of directors for Texas Bank and the Parker County Tax Authority and a lifetime member of the National Cutting Horse Association. He is a former member of the board of trustees for Weatherford College, Weatherford ISD and Weatherford/Parker County Economic Development. He is also a former president of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce. His other honors include receiving the Weatherford Outstanding Citizen Award, the General Motors President Award and both Weatherford College 's James Doss Business Award and Carlos Hartnett Humanitarian Award. He is also the namesake for Weatherford High School's Jerry Durant Auditorium.
 Robert R. 'Bob' Onstead
(
'54) of Houston, founder and former chair of Randall's Food Markets Inc. Onstead began his career as store manager of Randall's Super Valu, which he expanded into Houston-based Randall's Food Markets Inc., one of the largest regional supermarket chains in the United States. He served as chair of the board of Randall's from 1966 to 1999. Onstead has been president of Onstead Interests since 1999 and a limited partner in the Houston Texans of the National Football League since 2001. He has served as a board member of Texas Commerce Bank and the Houston Chamber of Commerce as well as many other organizations. He is a lifetime director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Among other honors, he received the Man of the Year Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation of Houston Gulf Coast and the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Rotary Club of Houston. He was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1993.
 Marvin Stamm
(
'61) of North Salem, N.Y. , renowned jazz trumpeter. Stamm joined the orchestra of Stan Kenton as trumpet soloist after graduating from the North Texas music program. He toured with Kenton in 1961-62 and with the Woody Herman Orchestra in 1965-66. He later gained recognition for his playing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (1966-72) and the Duke Pearson Big Band (1967-70) and toured with Frank Sinatra (1973-74) and the Benny Goodman Sextet (1974-75). After performing and recording with many notable jazz and "pop" performers from the 1960s through the ' 80s, Stamm has since concentrated solely on jazz and currently performs as a soloist, with pianist Bill Mays and with his jazz quartet. He also tours colleges and universities in the United States and abroad as a jazz educator.

Glory Award
Presented to individuals, not necessarily alumni, whose assistance to the university has enabled it to have "a substantial margin of excellence in its endeavors":
 John R. Carmichael
('76 M.B.A.) of Dallas, co-founder and president of Westwood Residential Co. He is a member of the UNT President's Council as well as a board member of the College of Business Administration. He was also named an Outstanding Alumnus in Finance by the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law. He is a past board member of the Trammell Crow Residential Co., where he was regional partner from 1976 to 1990. Other activities include memberships in the National Multi-Housing Council and the Real Estate Council of Dallas.
 Ray

'40, '41 M S.) and Georgia Gough ('45 M.S.) of Denton, each a Professor Emeritus of art at UNT. Ray, an environmental designer, is an international lecturer, chair of Accreditation Committees for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Foundation, a member of the board of governors of the Interior Design Education Council and a member of the UNT President's Council. Georgia, whose work has been included in state and national exhibitions, has been a craftsman/trustee for the American Craft Council, secretary of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and president of the Craft Guild of Dallas.
Honorary
Alumnus/Alumna Award
Awarded to individuals who were never students at UNT, but whose outstanding devotion to the university has been clearly demonstrated
 Hugh M. Ayer
of Denton, UNT Professor Emeritus of history and former associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Ayer taught at the Culver Military Academy before joining the history faculty at North Texas in 1958. He retired from the university in 1986. His activities have included membership on the Denton Planning and Zoning Board, the Denton City Council and the board of directors of the Denton Area Teachers Credit Union. He is a member of the UNT President's Council.
 Frederick R. 'Fred' Pole
of Denton, who served at UNT for 22 years as an administrator. Pole arrived at North Texas as executive assistant to the president in 1980 after a 27-year Army career. He was named vice president for external affairs in 1981 and vice president for administrative affairs in 1982, serving in that position for 18 years. He accepted additional responsibilities in 1999 when the UNT Board of Regents appointed him vice chancellor for administration for the UNT System. He officially retired from UNT in 2002. He is a member of the UNT President's Council.
Outstanding Alumnus/Alumna Service Award
Given to alumni who have "rendered volunteerism of exemplary nature" to the university
 Jim D. Starr
(
'60, '62 M.A.) of Colleyville, who served Hurst as city manager for 16 years. After receiving his bachelor's degree in government and economics, Starr received a master's in municipal management from North Texas, becoming one of the first graduates of UNT's municipal management program (now the master of public administration program). He was named an Outstanding M.P.A. Alumnus in 1997. A member of the UNT President's Council and the Mean Green Club, he has also served as president and member of the board of the North Texas Exes. Before becoming Hurst city manager, Starr was deputy executive director of the North Central Texas Council of Governments and assistant city manager for the cities of Irving and Denton.
 Joe

'71 Ed.D.) and Judy Stewart ('84) of Denton. Joe served as associate director of housing, dean of students and vice president of student affairs at UNT before retiring in 1998. He has received numerous UNT honors including the College of Education Outstanding Alumnus Award. Judy worked at UNT as a personnel specialist and assistant director of equal opportunity from 1969 to 1988 and was manager of employer relations at Texas Woman's University until 1993. The Stewarts are members of the Mean Green Club and life members of the North Texas Exes and the UNT President's Council. Both were honored with UNT's Continuing Academic and Professional Service Council Award for exemplary service to the university and to Denton in 2003.

 G.A. Moore Jr. (
'62, '67 M.Ed.) of Pilot Point, who became Texas' winningest high school football coach in 2002. Since landing his first coaching job in 1962, Moore has spent all but three years of his career at either Pilot Point High School or nearby Celina High School. Under his leadership the Celina Bobcats had a 57-game unbeaten streak and won four straight Class 2A state championships from 1998 to 2001 after previously winning in 1995. Coaching at Pilot Point High School in 2002, Moore won his 397th game, breaking retired coach Gordon Wood's state record of 396 wins. A lifetime member of the UNT Letterman Club, Moore was inducted into the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
 Robert W. Ottman
(
'56 Ph.D.) of Denton, a Professor Emeritus of music at UNT who was coordinator of music theory studies at the bachelor's and master's degree levels from 1946 to 1982. He also directed the Women's Chorus and the Madrigal Singers during his time at North Texas. Ottman has been involved with the Community Advisory Council and the College of Music Dean's Camerata at UNT and is a life member of the UNT President's Council. He has written or co-written 11 textbooks for music theory at the college level. His Music for Sight Singing textbook, published in 1956, was released this year in its sixth revised edition.
Ulys
Knight Spirit Award
Awarded to a UNT alumnus, alumna or group that has made noteworthy efforts to sustain spirit among the UNT family. Ulys Knight ('28) was on North Texas' championship basketball team in the early 1920s and was named the most popular student on campus. He was later known as "Mr. North Texas" for his participation in alumni activities.
 Scott W. Hatfield
(
'77) of Dallas, a certified public accountant who is very active in the North Texas community. He serves on the alumni advisory board of the College of Business Administration and the National Finance and Budget Committee of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He is a member of the President's Council and the Mean Green Club and a life member of the North Texas Exes. He is also on the editorial advisory board of www.FinancialWire.net, a member of the Dallas Press Club and a life member of the U.S. Lighthouse Society.
 Zachary C. Tucker
(
'92 M.Ed.) of Denton , branch manager/officer of First State Bank of Texas in Denton. He was an activities coordinator at UNT from 1984 to 1996 and has served on the UNT Union board of directors, the Honors Day Committee and the Parking Appeals and Housing Appeals boards. Three times he has been named an outstanding alumnus of Lambda Chi Alpha, and he is currently the vice president of the fraternity's alumni association.
