Talent Found
[media mention]
When Sylvia
Lozano (97) graduated from Decatur High School, college was
the furthest thing from her mind. But with encouragement from Kathy
Rawlings Taylor, director of the Talent Search program at UNT, she
enrolled at North Texas. Seven years later, Lozano, who worked while
attending school, finished her bachelors degree. And last
fall, she was hired to work as a UNT Talent Search counselor herself.
Counselors in the program, which is aimed at low-income students,
help area sixth- through 12th-graders plan for college. Through
the years of getting her degree, Lozano says she thought about quitting,
but then I knew how proud my father was, and I stuck with
it. She now hopes to pursue a masters degree.
