Don Owen (M.M.), Tampa, Fla., has been awarded the rank of Professor Emeritus. He retired last year from the University of South Florida School of Music after 38 years of service and is an active member of the Florida Orchestra.

Donna L. Brazell Chapman (M.Ed.), Comanche, has been named project manager for Comanche's Community Networking Grant, which will help expand residents' access to technology. She was a teacher, librarian and technology coordinator for the Comanche ISD before retiring last year.

William E. Martin, Henderson, Nev., was named a 2003 Distinguished Nevadan by the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada. He chairs the Nevada State College Foundation and is president and chief executive officer of Nevada State Bank.

Donna S. Vise Pieplow, El Paso, retired in May after more than 36 years of teaching elementary students. She says she wanted to leave before she was carted away.

M. Susan Keck Smith, Portland, Ore., was named by President George W. Bush to serve as a member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science, which determines the medal's recipient. Smith is director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center and a professor at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

Jim Bennett, Monterey, Calif., has received renewal of his Certified Fundraising Executive designation. He is past president of the Monterey Bay chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and works as the development director with Hospice Foundation. He is also secretary of the board of Ariel Theatrical, a children's theater in Salinas, Calif.

Nat Paul Gibbs and Shirley S. Gibbs ('68), Mount Vernon, have been named Paul Harris Fellows by the Mount Vernon Rotary Club. Nat is part owner of Tri County Feed and serves on the board of directors of the First National Bank of Mount Vernon. Shirley is a licensed LPC and a professional speaker for Christian retreats.

Mary Lou Cook Veal ('77 M.Ed.), Greensboro, N.C., is president of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She just completed a term as chair of the Curriculum and Instruction Academy of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Bahman Sholevar, Northampton, Pa., has been named psychiatrist associate on the staff at Access Services Outpatient Clinic in Orwigsburg. Sholevar has served as a professor of psychiatry and literature and worked as an international lecturer on the creative process and the psychology of arts and artists.

Tom Koch, DeSoto, works as the public relations coordinator and program manager for McDermott Library at the University of Texas at Dallas. He also serves as the president of the Texas Postal History Society and chair of the annual Texas Philatelic Exhibition and is a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas.

Carol Vann Losee, New Paltz, N.Y., is a private piano teacher and a member of the Two For You piano duo. She is a co-founder of the New Paltz Piano Fest, a multi-keyboard ensemble festival, and a songwriter, keyboardist and vocalist for Stained Glass, a contemporary Christian music group. Jerald ‘Jerry' E. Smith, Humble, retired in June after 34 years in the education communications profession. He served the last 22 years as executive assistant to the superintendent for board and community services for the Spring ISD.

Mario Vasquez, Houston, has been practicing law since 1985 in Houston. He was in private practice before joining the legal staff of the Houston ISD, where he has been an assistant general counsel for the last six years. Before receiving his law degree, he earned a master's degree in environmental management with a concentration in urban studies and worked for the Alamo Area Council of Governments, the governor's office and the South Texas Health Systems Agency.
