William D. Deering, Burleson, 91, Professor Emeritus of physics, died Feb. 17. He taught for more than 40 years at North Texas, where he shared his deep knowledge of physics with students. He joined the university in 1965 after earning a bachelor’s degree at Texas Christian University and master’s and doctoral degrees from New Mexico State University.
Known as an excellent instructor, he had served as acting chair of the Department of Physics and was a longtime graduate advisor. Some of his research interests as a theoretician through the years included applying quantum mechanics and electromagnetic theory to the study of solid-state structures with small size; studying electron behavior in thin films and layered thin films, or quantum wells; and looking at nonlinear phenomena, with a focus on the application of nonlinear optics to optical couplers and switching devices.
In his free time, he enjoyed cooking, woodworking, target practice and staying abreast of new scientific advances. He also loved watching baseball and college football.
In addition to his contributions to education, his family says he’ll be remembered for his kindness, his intellect and “a unique sense of humor that made him a joy to be around.”
