Scott Norton, 88, Argyle, Professor Emeritus of biochemistry who taught at UNT for more than 40 years, died June 28.

He worked in industrial chemical laboratories to support himself in college, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from what was then Abilene Christian College in 1959, where he met his wife of 68 years, Glenice. He earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Texas in Austin in 1962, supported by a fellowship awarded by the National Institutes of Health. He then joined the North Texas faculty and in later years split his time teaching at UNT and the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth (at what is today the UNT Health Science Center).

At UNT, he served as director of the biochemistry division from 1992 until his retirement in 2003. He was the author or co-author of more than 100 publications in chemistry-related journals and several patents; lectured at scientific meetings worldwide, including at the University of Perugia in Italy and at Oxford University in England; consulted for various companies and offered expert scientific testimony in court.

He served as an elder at Singing Oaks Church of Christ in Denton for many years and as president of the Argyle School Board and the Graham-Argyle Cemetery. He was known as “Doc” to his grandchildren and “Great Doc” to his great-grandchildren, crafted special toys for them and taught them “all the things their parents forgot.”
