David R. Lindsey (’79 Ph.D.), 86, an accomplished accordionist, music theorist and librarian who worked at UNT from 1979 to 2007, died April 22.

Remembered as a gifted musician and dedicated educator, he began his musical journey with the accordion at just 8 years old and earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in concert accordion and music theory from the University of Denver. He completed his Ph.D. in music theory at North Texas, teaching music theory classes and working in Willis Library, where he became the director of the microform department.

He had served in the U.S. Army Rangers and completed several tours with the 7th Army Symphony. He also performed and composed music for ensembles — including violinist Jack Cannon’s string quartet with bass and accordion, and a trio of accordion, violin and bass — and accompanied renowned artists through the years, such as Luciano Pavarotti and Barbra Streisand.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the College of Music Dean’s Excellence Fund, supporting the college’s highest priorities and enriching opportunities for students.
