Dr. Carroll Young Rich, 91, Professor Emeritus of English, died Oct. 16 in Plano. Born in Arcadia, Louisiana, he was an accomplished scholar and author, earning a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and a master's and doctorate from Louisiana State University.

He joined the North Texas English faculty in 1959, teaching courses such as Old English, Beowulf and Chaucer. He served as a Fulbright Scholar in Spain and loved teaching and advising graduate students on their theses and dissertations. He held several administrative positions and published poems and articles in literary and research journals throughout his career, including “The Day They Shot Bonnie and Clyde” for The Texas Folklore Society. He began modified service at UNT in 1990, continuing to teach part-time through 1995 before moving to Plano in 2021.

He was known as a great teacher, a kind man and an engaging storyteller with a keen sense of humor. He loved his family, friends and students, and he had a passion for traveling and antiquing.
