Billy Tubbs, 85, of Norman, Oklahoma, who served three seasons as an assistant basketball
coach for UNT, died Nov. 1. Tubbs played basketball then launched into his coaching
career in 1960 at his alma mater, Lamar State College of Technology, now Lamar University.
He went on to serve as head coach for Southwestern University and coached at UNT from
1973 to 1976, aiding the team in achieving a turnaround from a 6-20 record in 1975
to 22-4 in 1976. He later coached at the University of Oklahoma and Texas Christian
University and was only the ninth coach in the NCAA to record 100 wins at three different
schools. Tubbs was highly regarded as a “fun-loving coach.”
