Hispanic Heritage Month at UNT includes several events celebrating Latino culture. The creation of traditional Latin art is the focus of “Artesania” at noon Sept. 24 in the University Union Courtyard. The event is co-sponsored by UNT’s Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, whose members will help participants design such art as piñatas, Mexican sun-faces and Zapotec rug paintings.
On Oct. 8, Denton-area Latino organizations and community members will network at “La Vida Denton,” a reception designed to connect college students with one another and community leaders. The reception will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Denton’s Center for the Visual Arts at the corner of Bell Avenue and Hickory Street. The event, sponsored by UNT, Texas Woman's University, North Central Texas College and the Denton Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, also is open to faculty and staff of the schools.
The festivities for Hispanic Heritage Month conclude with a Celebration Banquet at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 in UNT’s Gateway Center Ballroom, featuring the music of Mariachi Aguilas and a keynote speech by Laura Morales, founder of Energize Your Outlook. The banquet honors Latino culture and recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding Latino students, faculty and staff at UNT. Admission is free with a school supply donation for Interfaith Ministries. RSVP to UNT’s Multicultural Center at 940-565-3424 by Oct. 1.
