Music student earns opera award

Doctoral music student Heather Hawk clinched first prize in the Dallas Opera Guild’s 24th Annual Vocal Competition for young opera singers. The competition was held this spring at the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas.
Hawk, who received an $8,000 cash prize in the competition, has sung the title role in Handel’s Alcina and was selected to perform in a concert of music by Jake Heggie, the 2010-11 artist-in-residence for UNT’s Institute for the Advancement of the Arts. Hawk also has performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and at the 2011 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis.
