Melissa Hatheway, a senior music education major and Honors College student, earned the Performing Arts Medicine Association's Alice G. Brandfonbrener Young Investigator Award for her research on the health issues of marching band musicians.

She is the second undergraduate to win the award and the first from the U.S. She also is the first non-medical student to earn the honor. Hatheway was inspired to conduct the research after she experienced pain while playing her clarinet during high school.

Working with faculty mentor Kris Chesky ('88 M.M.Ed., '92 Ph.D.), professor of music, Hatheway developed the first of its kind study on collegiate marching band health issues.
