Poet, author, educator and actress Maya Angelou spoke at the UNT Coliseum Sept. 14. “An Evening With Dr. Maya Angelou” was presented by the Division of Equity and Diversity.

This fall, UNT relocated two dome telescopes to the new Rafes Urban Astronomy Center, located west of the main campus near the Denton Municipal Airport. One dome roof was moved from the UNT Observatory, the old Nike missile base site north of Denton, and a second was purchased.

A longstanding UNT tradition, Family Weekend, took place in September on campus. Some of the activities for students and their families included brunch with UNT President Gretchen Bataille, campus tours, a chili cook-off and the Mean Green football game against Middle Tennessee State.

UNT was a stop on the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network’s “2006 Get Your Money Right” financial empowerment tour Oct. 14. Among the artists discussing the importance of personal finance at the free event in the UNT Auditorium were, from top, Dallas native and R&B/hip-hop artist Erykah Badu, HSAN co-chair and co-founder Russell Simmons, hip-hop artist Paul Wall, HSAN’s chief executive officer Benjamin Chavis with Killer Mike, and Rocsi of BET’s 106 & Park with Raz-B of B2K.

Construction continued on Chestnut Hall, located on the northeast corner of Chestnut and Avenue D. The UNT Career Center, Counseling and Testing Center, Student Money Management Center and other student services offices moved into the new building in December. The Student Health and Wellness Center will relocate in January.
