• Gladys Welch Turner ('29), Gainesville. She taught at schools in Delaware Bend, Myra, Spur and Angleton and at the Gainesville State School for Girls. She also worked at the Cooke County Library.

1930s [ top ]

• Mary Hiett Dyer ('32), Edmond, Okla. She worked at the Tulsa Public Library and for many years was the storyteller on its bookmobile.
• Helen Willard ('36), Durham, N.C. She taught home economics in several high schools, mostly in West Texas. Her father, T.A. Willard, was on the chemistry faculty at North Texas from 1922 to 1944.
• Margaret Middleton Allison ('37), Dallas. She taught in Texas public schools and joined North Texas as director of the nursery school and assistant professor of child development in 1942.
• Mary Myrle Johnson Anderson ('38), Austin. She taught for 30 years at schools in Boz, Burleson, Alvarado, Fort Worth, College Station and Austin.
• Imogene McCallum Montgomery ('38), Opelousas, La. In 1945 she began work as an instructor at the nursery school for the Department of Home Economics at Southwestern Louisiana Institute and retired in 1980 as an associate professor.

• Bill W. Davis ('41), George West. He earned a music education degree from North Texas.
• Jessie Lee Wilkinson Richardson ('41), Elbert. She taught at Elbert and Woodson and for more than 20 years at Olney. She had traveled extensively in the United States and to Mexico.
• Ruth Hudson Mitchell ('42), Aledo. She taught for 35 years in Bryan and Fort Worth schools and in New Orleans.
• Oliver V. Johnston Jr. ('43), Morgan. He retired from Dow Chemical Co. after more than 40 years of employment. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II.
• James B. Outlaw Jr. ('44, '59 M.S.), Boise, Idaho. He was a teacher, coach and lifelong runner. He won more than 100 trophies for running victories, including the 110-mile Padre Island Walkathon, which he won in 1954 as the oldest runner at age 35. He qualified for the Boston Marathon at age 59.
• Mary Lu Kuykendall Griffith ('48), Bonham. She worked at the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham as a supply technician and secretary until her retirement in 1990.
• Alvis Moreland Coleman ('49), Richmond. He was a Methodist preacher who served churches in towns throughout Texas, including Longview, Galveston, Rosenberg, Houston, Crockett and Caldwell.
• Peggy Ruth Hudspeth ('49), Oklahoma City. The Navy career of her husband, the late Jake W. Hudspeth ('49), took them throughout the United States, the Philippines and England before they retired in Oklahoma City. She worked at Harding and Shelton Inc.

• William G. Shadle ('50), Denton. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was the music and education director for Calvary Baptist Church in Tyler before serving as minister of music at First Baptist Church in Denton from 1963 to 1992.
• Mac W. Vincent ('50, '56 M.Ed.), Krum. He had served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army and was superintendent for the Krum and Chico ISDs before retiring.
• Herbert A. Wiist ('50, '51 M.S.), Sherman. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was employed by E.I. DuPont, where he developed several patented processes. After retiring, he continued to work occasionally as a consultant for the company.
• Ann Negy Chilton ('51), Stephenville. She earned a bachelor's degree from North Texas in home economics and was married to Stuart Chilton ('64 Ed.D.). Her uncle, Alex Dickie, was registrar at North Texas from 1940 to 1964.
• Patricia Ann Greaves Wall ('51), Fort Worth. She was a pianist and taught piano and voice in Fort Worth and the Mid-Cities for 52 years.
• Marshall Tunnell ('52), Fort Worth. He served in the Army during the Korean War and worked as an insurance adjuster with CNA Insurance Co., retiring in 1996.
• Wayne Howell ('53), Huntsville. He was a chemist who had worked for Celanese, National Chemsearch, Sargent Welch, Research Products, Allstates Chemical and Sunbelt Laboratories. He was married to Mary
  Winstead Howell ('52).
• Ray McGallion ('53, '53 M.S.), Silsbee. He played football at North Texas and served as head football coach and athletic director in Silsbee, retiring after 39 years.
• Norma Lee Hale-Burns ('54), Palestine. She owned and operated the McDonald Developmental Home in Balch Springs and later taught special-needs inmates for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
• Bette Joyce Jones Gill ('55, '59 M.Ed.), Panhandle. She taught for 32 years in public schools in Dallas, Spearman and Panhandle.
• Jamie Loughmiller Matthews ('55), Canton. She was an educator and played the organ for the First United Methodist Church in Canton for more than 20 years.
• Harrell L. Stevens ('55), Dallas. He retired in 1992 from the law firm Stevens, Rolle, Madden and Breeland and had practiced law in Dallas since 1962. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and at North Texas was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha.
• Sue Ann Nelson Boehnke ('56), Brenham. She was a retired drill team director for Blinn College and also taught art.
• Vernell Pugh Gallien ('57), Orange. Her degree from North Texas was in business education.
• Dorn Louise Williams Long ('57, '68 M.Ed.), Frisco. She was a physical therapist who joined Texas
  Woman's University in 1974 as associate professor and academic coordinator of clinical education, retiring in 2000.
• Edward Allen Walton ('59), Plano. He was director of labor relations for Alcatel in Richardson until his retirement in 1993.

1960s [ top ]

• Pershing Joe Yium ('60), Dallas. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and worked more than 47 years in the advertising department of the Dallas Morning News. He was a longtime North Texas football season ticket-holder.
• Edmond Lewis ('61 M.M.Ed.), Greenbelt, Md. He taught in several Texas schools, including Ranger Junior College, and in the Prince George's County schools in Maryland. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was also a well-known music writer, composer and director in the Washington, D.C., area.
• Walter A. Johanns ('64), Little River. He taught at Temple College until his retirement in 1996.
• Beverly Davis Tilley ('64), Fredericksburg. She traveled extensively and sang in church and civic choirs, most recently with the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and the Fredericksburg Chorale.
• Ronald Ray Calhoun ('65), Palestine. He was retired from Palestine Contractors and enjoyed flying, skiing, golf, scuba diving and photography.
• Tom Franklin Ward Jr. ('66), Granbury. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was the first CPA to practice in Granbury, where he worked for 32 years.
• James Carlton Bratcher ('69), Dallas. He worked as an auditor for several federal agencies and retired in 1999. At North Texas he was a member of Beta Alpha Psi.
• Carlyle M. Cochran ('69 M.M.Ed.), Springfield, Mo. He was a retired teacher, having taught in Rio Hondo and in Republic, Niangua and Brunswick, Mo.
• George Herbert Fogarty ('69), Dallas. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel. In Dallas he designed electronics for Texas Instruments.
• Virgil Pope ('69), Dallas. He was an attorney in Dallas for 32 years and a life member of the North Texas Exes.

1970s [ top ]

• Marc Armstrong ('70), Boerne. He earned an M.D. from Tulane and was a professor at the University of Alabama Medical School. At North Texas he was active in the Beta Eta chapter of the Alpha Chi Sigma chemistry fraternity.
• Theodore 'Ted' DeWeese ('70, '72 M.A.), Dallas, Ore. After retiring from the insurance industry in 1992, he edited and published a nine-volume genealogy series for the National DeWees/DeWeese Family Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
• Robert E. Reed ('74), Fort Worth. He was a Vietnam veteran and an insurance adjuster, an occupation he referred to as "storm trooper."
• Betty Bayne W. Shafer ('74), Keller. She earned a bachelor's degree from North Texas in library science.
• Anita J. Battershell ('75, '81 M.A.), Fort Worth. She worked for Mental Health Mental Retardation of Tarrant County for 23 years, most recently as a programmer-analyst.
• Michael D. Harris ('75), Houston. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and was owner and president of MCC Transport Inc. At North Texas he was president of Sigma Nu.
• Jessie Margetts Jensen ('75 M.L.S.), Dallas. She worked at the Dallas Public Library until 1996, when she retired after 30 years of service.
• Eric Isham Pushmataha Nelson ('79), Dallas. He earned an accounting degree from North Texas and was a CPA in Dallas for a number of years.

• Diane Marie Smith ('80), Fort Worth. She was a supervisor in the marketing division of Ernst and Young and volunteered at Cook Children's Medical Center.
• Samuel Rodney Fleming ('81), Denton. He retired from the city of Denton in 1998 after 25 years of service as a computer analyst.
• Sha Lynn McDonnell Navejar ('82), Grover Beach, Calif. She earned a degree from North Texas in marketing.
• Chen-Pang Wu ('82), Alhambra, Calif. He earned an accounting degree from North Texas.
• Lori Gay Adams Casas ('88), Fort Worth. She had worked as an account sales manager for Dr Pepper Co.

• Karen Lee Ewens ('90), Lakeway. She was a ninth-grade English teacher in the Round Rock ISD.
• Gail Gibson ('91, '91 M.S.), Lake Dallas. She was a CPA for Federal Management Systems Inc. in Dallas and taught accounting at North Central Texas College.
• Lauri Hilliard Warren ('91), Flower Mound. She taught first and second grades at the Keller and Lewisville ISDs before becoming a stay-at-home mom to raise her two children. She met her husband, Kellan D. Warren ('91), at North Texas, where she was a Sigma Nu little sister.

University Community [ top ]

• A. Franklin Bonner Jr., Aubrey, KNTU-FM chief engineer, 1974-1998. He was a member of Optimist International and the Society of Broadcast Engineers and worked with Boy Scouts of America for more than 30 years. During his tenure at KNTU, he moved the station's studio facilities four times and its transmitter site twice, overseeing upgrades of the station from 440 watts to an eventual 100,000 watts.
• Dewey Eugene Carroll, Professor and Dean Emeritus of the School of Library and Information Sciences, 1973-1997. Carroll earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Chattanooga, a master's from Emory University and a doctorate from the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and again during the Korean War. He was director of libraries and professor at the University of Chattanooga prior to joining North Texas.
• Raymond G. Daniloff, Slidell, La., professor and chair of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, 1993-1999. He earned his bachelor's degree from California University of Pennsylvania, his master's from Harvard and his doctorate from the University of Iowa. His expertise included speech perception and acoustics.
• Johnnie Kate Jetton ( '59, '60 M.A.), Denton, Professor Emeritus of English, 1960-1996. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in English from North Texas and her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. She was a teaching fellow at North Texas in 1959 and an instructor from 1960 until she was promoted to assistant professor in 1974. She was a member of the American Association of University Professors, among other organizations.
• Norma Jean Williams, Arlington, professor of sociology and assistant vice president and director of multicultural affairs, 1989-1997. A specialist in race and ethnic relations, she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas A&I University and her doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin. She had served on the faculty at UT-Arlington since 1997.
