James “Keith” Shelton ('72 M.J.), Denton, who served 23 years on the Mayborn School of Journalism faculty, died Dec. 11. He earned a bachelor's in English from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls and went on to serve as a member of the Army Signal Corps in post-war occupied Frankfurt, Germany. Following his discharge, he began a lengthy journalism career as a city hall reporter and political writer for the Wichita Falls Record-News. At the Dallas Times-Herald, he covered the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the careers of four other U.S. presidents as well as Texas Gov. John Connally. He served on the Texas Supreme Court Task Force on Judicial Ethics, was president of the Dallas Press Club and secretary and director of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas. In 1965, Keith became editor of the Denton Record-Chronicle and later was named managing editor and executive editor of three newspapers run by Denton Publishing, where he worked for 35 years. He joined the North Texas journalism faculty in 1969 and during his 23 years at the university, he earned a master’s in journalism, instructed three future Pulitzer Prize winners and became the first faculty advisor to the student newspaper. Upon his retirement, the Keith Shelton Scholarship for journalism students was established in his honor. He also wrote his memoir, Chance: My Life As a Series of Chances. A lifelong fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys, he was involved with his church and the Denton Humane Society. Read his essay about his life that was published in the North Texan in 2023.
