He enlisted in the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant after graduating from North Texas. He served from 1962 to 1969, flying the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker during the Vietnam War, received several medals and achieved the military rank of captain by the time he was honorably discharged. He continued flying in a career with United Airlines, achieving the rank of captain and later standards captain. Tom, a North Texas native, was buried with a color guard salute and military funeral.
