01/13/2026 12:11:28 PMObituaryobituaryTeel Sale (’74, ’76 M.F.A.), 92, Ennis, an artist, author and faculty member who taught in the visual arts and Honors programs at UNT from 1975 to 1989, died Nov. 3. After her sons were born, Teel returned to college to complete her art degrees at North Texas. As a lecturer in drawing and painting, she co-wrote Drawing: A Contemporary Approach (1980) with fellow faculty member Claudi Betti. The textbook — emphasizing the emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual significance of art and including the work of contemporary artists across cultures — was widely adopted and is now in its sixth edition. Teel’s work in drawing, painting, printmaking and performance art was featured nationally and internationally, and she received a Pouch Cove Foundation Grant in 2001 for drawing. She served as the art editor of Trilobite Press, which was founded by her husband, Richard Sale, now a Professor Emeritus of English. She also was a book designer for university presses, a book reviewer for Texas Books in Review, and a visiting artist and lecturer at colleges and universities nationwide. In 2020, Teel donated an archive of more than 200 of her works on paper to UNT Special Collections. It includes linocut prints, embossed prints, drawings and collages from 1972 to 2020, and artist's books, sketches and research materials. In retirement, she continued to enjoy reading, writing and creating art. In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Steve (’76) and Tom (’90 M.F.A.).
