Paul was an educator and administrator in Rockwall Independent School District until his retirement in 2005, although he worked as a substitute teacher until 2015. Paul served in the U.S. Navy in the mid-1960s, working on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was active in his church; a volunteer for the Rockwall County Helping Hands, Rockwall County Library and American Red Cross; a musician and writer; and an avid traveler who visited all 50 states.
