Lorin C. Richtmeyer, Atlanta, Ga., died June 8. He taught musical instrument repair
in the College of Music from 1984 to 1997 after retiring as a professor of music from
Northern Michigan University. He received a bachelor of music degree from Central
Michigan University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University.Richtmeyer
was in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Italy as a cryptographer deciphering
classified messages. He also formed a swing band that helped entertain his combat
buddies. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.He
was an avid runner who competed in marathons in New York, Honolulu, Portland, Dallas
and London, including a race on his 70th birthday. He ran his last half-marathon at
age 77. Survivors include his daughter, Debra A. Richtmeyer, former faculty member
in the College of Music.
