Jim Barlow (’72), 89, a journalist who had a long career in newspapers and public relations, died April 30, 2026. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army for over two years as part of the 13th Infantry Regiment. Known for his wry sense of humor, he joked that he “won no medals” and “advanced from private to private first class.” He wrote for newspapers in Denton and Beaumont and wrote a business column for the Houston Chronicle, where he worked for 25 years. His career also included stints in radio and television and with the Associated Press. He served as a press secretary for two statewide candidates and as a public information officer for UNT, the city of Denton and the Houston ISD.

Jim enjoyed jazz music and was known for his curiosity. As his self-written obit says, “Barlow was noted for carrying around thousands of facts in his head, many of which were true.”
