J. Arthur “Art” Cooper, Panguitch, Utah, 92, Professor Emeritus of education at North Texas from 1966 through 1998, died Feb. 5. He attended Stanford University, the University of Utah and Vanderbilt University where he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy of education.

A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a mission from 1953 through 1956 in San Antonio. He was a weather observer in the United States Air Force from 1956 through 1958, when he was elected to the Utah State Legislature and served one term as the youngest legislator on record at the time.

Art taught in the Weber County, Utah, school district and at the University of Arizona before joining the faculty at North Texas, where he was active in faculty governance, serving several terms on the Faculty Senate as well as on the University Planning Council. He was a member of the Denton Hi Noon Lions Club and served for a decade on the Argyle ISD School Board.

After retiring, he moved back to his hometown of Panguitch and volunteered with several community organizations.
