Schwark</title><description/><author/><type>obituary</type><categories/><relationships/><main-content>Harris D. Schwark, 73, Denton, a neuroscientist and associate professor who worked in the Department of Biological Sciences from 1989 to 2017, died April 23, 2025.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and a master’s in psychology and doctorate in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining UNT, he served as a postdoctoral fellow and assistant researcher at the University of California at Irvine, and as a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Goettingen, Germany. He later was a visiting scientist at the Riken Institute in Wako-Shi, Japan.
His research focused on how the brain processes visual and somatosensory information, and he conducted research with his wife, Jannon Fuchs, UNT professor of biology, on how primary cilia carry signals that are essential for neuron production and function. His collaborators were nationally and internationally known, and he was a beloved, respected teacher and mentor to many at UNT.</main-content></item>
