03/19/2026 12:06:50 AMObituaryobituaryGyna Bivens (’77), 71, of Fort Worth, who served as Fort Worth’s mayor pro tem and represented District 5 on the city council for six terms from 2013 to 2025, died Feb. 9, 2026. In her tenure, she helped reshape and reform the district, which covers much of East Fort Worth including historic neighborhoods like Stop Six and Handley.  In 1977, she earned her B.A. in radio, television and film from North Texas and subsequently became a broadcast journalist reporting in Dallas, Lubbock and San Antonio. She left journalism for communications positions with the city of San Antonio and Oncor Electric Delivery.   She also served as president and executive director of the nonprofit North Texas LEAD (Leaders and Executives Advocating Diversity), which connects job seekers with employers. She served on countless boards and committees throughout her life, including a term on the National League of Cities’ Board of Directors in 2024. She’s remembered as a tireless advocate for the city and the neighborhoods she served, who generously shared her knowledge and support. During her time at UNT, she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
