Fred H. Bleil, Houston, former assistant football coach for the Mean Green, died Sept.
26. Bleil was defensive coordinator at UNT in 1997 and 1998 and returned in 2006 as
defensive coordinator and secondary coach. He was head coach at New Mexico Highlands
University from 1979 to 1982, where he was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference
Coach of the Year and AFCA College Division Coach of the Year. He spent eight years
as secondary and special teams coach at San Diego State and coached at New Mexico,
Utah State, Tulane and Texas State. Former UNT standout Brian Waters, now playing
with the NFL’s New England Patriots, was an all-conference selection while playing
for Bleil. Bleil played football at Northern Iowa, earned a bachelor’s degree from
Westmar College and a master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University.
