Charles Basil Martin, Sanger, an English department faculty member at North Texas for 35 years prior to his 1999 retirement, died Dec. 11. He earned bachelor’s degrees in English and Spanish from the University of New Mexico and master’s degrees in the subjects from the University of Florida before completing his doctorate in English at the University of Missouri-Columbia. For five years, he was an associate professor of English at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma, before joining the North Texas faculty in 1964. His academic career included two Fulbright lectureships in Spain from 1967 to 1987 and Morocco in 1986. A devoted member of his church who participated in several mission trips, he had a passion for travel.
