He spent 23 years at Santa Rosa High School in the Rio Grande Valley and was a health teacher, school librarian and varsity basketball coach before retiring in 2012. A passion for sports led Carl to officiate games with the Texas Association of Sports Officials, which honored him with a 30-year distinguished service award. He was an active traveler and an outdoor enthusiast.
