Sterling Carter, Columbus, Ohio, received the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s (GCAC) $20,000 Artists Elevated award for 2022. The award provides artists who have three years of professional experience with “a meaningful investment in moving an artist forward in their career.” The media arts major is a videographer and cinematographer who has created several documentaries, including A Beloved Community: A Healthier Linden, a film for Nationwide Children’s in Linden, Ohio, and Our Voices: The Sounds of the Silenced, about Black women who are activists. His company, The Carter Effect, provides filmmaking and commercial video production services, and Sterling also has served as cinematographer for New Salem Missionary Baptist Church since 2019. While at UNT, he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and the Mean Green football team, and active in KNTU, NTTV’s “Mean Green Sports Zone,” Study Abroad office, C.A.S.T. and the Multicultural Affairs office.
