Sarah Broom, New York, N.Y., is executive director of Village Health Works, a nonprofit organization with offices in New York that brings health care to the people of Burundi. The Central East African nation is reported to be one of the world’s poorest countries. Sarah was previously communications director at The Praxis Project, which works with grassroots organizations to shift policy related to health justice, and was senior writer for Mayor Ray Nagin in her hometown of New Orleans. She lived for a year in Burundi, where she worked with an all-Burundian staff to develop new programming for independent radio station Radio Publique Africaine.
