Randy M. Drake, La Crescenta, Calif. :: received a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology in June 2018 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Randy’s dissertation “Musical Performance and Trans Identity: Narratives of Selfhood, Embodied Identities and Musicking” is an ethnography of trans identity and North American music and explores the ways musicking makes viable underrepresented forms of embodiment. In conjunction with his Ph.D., Randy also was awarded a doctoral emphasis in feminist studies, as well as a certificate in college and university teaching. Randy earned his master’s degree in jazz studies at California State University, Long Beach, in 2011. His favorite UNT memory is “living and ultimately sweating (both mentally and literally without air conditioning) in Bruce Hall. My first year of college was both rewarding and exhilarating thanks to the high level of dedicated music-making among fellow music majors.”
