Marilyn Gibson Calhoun (’73 M.Ed.), Dallas :: received the Sojourner Truth Award by The North Texas Business & Professional Women's League, Inc., in March as part of Women's History Month. The award is presented by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc., to a woman who has given outstanding community service beyond the call of duty. Calhoun has 40 years of experience in the education field, serving as teacher, principal and adviser for Dallas ISD. She is the founder and CEO of Learning Exposures Foundation, which engages youth in literacy/oral presentation projects. She also is active in Phi Delta Kappa, the Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education and Remembering Black Dallas. Her favorite campus memory is teaching at North Texas State’s Laboratory Elementary School as a student teacher. “The teachers, parents and students became lifelong friends,” she says.
