Lauren Gay Hawkins ('11), Carrollton :: is one of five state finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. She has worked as an instructional technology specialist for six years at Richardson ISD. The award is the highest honor the U.S. government grants K-12 mathematics and science teachers. Winners receive a signed presidential certificate, a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend recognition events, and professional development and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. “I hope to further spread my love of mathematics and education as I continue my career and I want to encourage all teachers to remain steadfast in their love of education,” says Hawkins. “I want teachers to know that they are not unrecognized and their drive is shown daily to their students. That's what matters most of all.” Lauren went through the Teach North Texas program, and credits John Quintanilla, professor of mathematics and associate dean for undergraduate studies, for influencing her teaching style.
