James Nations (’72 M.S.), Rockville, Maryland :: co-wrote the book Lacandón Maya: The Language and Environment, a dictionary of the indigenous Maya group the Lacandón Maya from the rainforest of Chiapas, Mexico. While researching his dissertation for a Ph.D. in anthropology from Southern Methodist University, he lived with the Lacandónes and learned their language over the course of three years. He maintained fluency through extended visits during the next four decades, during which time he helped to set up indigenous reserves and national parks throughout Latin America and the U.S.
