JACK HAYS, Austin. The former head football coach at Columbia High School saw the school’s fieldhouse named in his honor by the Columbia Brazoria ISD Board of Trustees last year. He served as a football coach for 18 years, leading Columbia to five district championships and an appearance in the state finals, until his retirement in 1981. He previously served as head coach of the El Campo Ricebirds for seven years. He has been named Brazoria County Coach of the Year twice and has received every major honor in the Texas High School Coaches Association, including induction to its Hall of Fame. He attended North Texas on a football scholarship and played quarterback, becoming a three-year letterman. He has been married to Ellen Mae Sikora (’55) for 67 years. They met at North Texas, where she was a Zeta Tau Alpha and Yucca Beauty, while Jack was a member of the Talons, which became a Kappa Alpha chapter.
