Andrew Lang (’08 M.A.), Starkville, Mississippi, wrote the book, A Contest of Civilizations: Exposing the Crisis of American Exceptionalism in the Civil War Era, which examines how the intellectual, political and social ramifications of the war affected America’s standing in the world and its own citizens. The book will be published in January. Lang is associate professor of history at Mississippi State University.
