Wrestling Hall of Famers

Six wrestlers display their award plaques.

The six Texans inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla., in 2008 were, from left, Jim Engstrom, UNT lecturer Bob Maughan, former student Mike McQueen, Henry Harmoney, alumnus Larry Karl III ('76) and Pete Grieder.

Three of the six Texans inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in Stillwater, Okla., in 2008 have UNT ties: Bob Maughan, lecturer in kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, and alumni Larry Karl III ('76) and Mike McQueen. The inductees were presented Lifetime Service to Wrestling awards from the Texas chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in November.

Maughan, who founded the club wrestling team at North Texas in 1970 and coached until 1983, began wrestling as a fifth grader. He received a wrestling scholarship from the University of Minnesota at Moorhead and was a member of the 1964 national championship team. He was named USA Wrestling's Texas Man of the Year in 2001 and was inducted into the Moorhead Hall of Fame in 2004.

Karl has been the wrestling coach at Skyline High School in Dallas since 1976. McQueen, who attended North Texas in 1971 and 1972, has been a wrestling official in the region since 1973. The other inductees were Jim Engstrom, official and wrestler from Fort Worth; Pete Grieder, Lake Highlands High School wrestling coach; and Henry Harmoney, Arlington High School wrestling coach.

Members to receive free Texas Monthly subscription

The University of North Texas Alumni Association, which was formerly the North Texas Exes and recently returned to its previous organizational name to better represent its mission, is establishing new partnerships to create more value for its members.

"The alumni association is pleased to announce the launch of a significant new benefit," says Derrick Morgan, executive director. "All life members will begin receiving complimentary annual subscriptions to Texas Monthly magazine, beginning with the January 2009 issue. Annual members also will receive this benefit in 2009, upon joining or renewing their memberships."

According to its web site, Texas Monthly "has chronicled life in contemporary Texas, reporting on vital issues such as politics, the environment, industry and education" since 1973 and is an "indispensable authority on the Texas scene, covering music, the arts, travel, restaurants, museums and cultural events with its insightful recommendations."
