For the first time in the college’s history a contest was held
to determine the eight most beautiful girls on campus, whose portraits
would be placed in the beauty section of the Yucca yearbook.
Pictures of the 16 girls with the highest votes were sent to a nationally
known artist who chose the eight he considered most beautiful and
drew each of their portraits. … A reward was offered for Simmie,
the Clubhouse mascot monkey, well known as an outstanding feature
in all Clubhouse frolics. Simmie disappeared before the Christmas
holidays. … The Eagles basketball team beat the McMurray Indians
in a two-game series, 32-22 and 55-21.

The commissioning ceremony for the first graduates of North Texas’
Air Force ROTC program took place. The program had begun two years
earlier with three cadets entering as advanced students based on previous
military experience. … The sophomore class purchased two 21-inch
television sets for the Union. One set was tuned to a Dallas channel
and the other to a Fort Worth channel. The controls were locked and
operated only by the Union director, the night hostesses and the student
caretakers who lived in the Union. … A copy machine was made
available for North Texas graduate students for work on research projects.
Students who wanted to use the machine were required to take their
materials to the bindery in the library basement with a written request
specifying the exact pages wanted.

The Denton City Council approved the removal of 192 streetlights from
six major thoroughfares in an effort to save the city money. …
Bad weather led to delays in registrations at the Coliseum and construction
work on the Music Building. … Grammy nominees Maynard Ferguson
and the Phil Woods Quintet appeared in concert at the Coliseum. Ferguson
was the lead trumpet player with Stan Kenton’s orchestra. His
single "Gonna Fly Now" (the theme from Rocky) was
nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1977. … Roadwork

Day with the dismissal of classes. A candlelight vigil was held at
the Auditorium Building followed by a march down Hickory Street to
the Courthouse Square. … West Hall offered dorm rooms for $9
a night to commuter students who did not want to go home for the evening
because of inclement weather or early-morning exams. … About
4,000 basketball fans crowded into the Coliseum for the annual “Pack
