On May 9, Tom Waller, professor of biological sciences, consented to a haircut to benefit the UNT student chapter of the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Student Michael Kavanaugh cut the 20-inch ponytail with a Bowie knife made by Ken Banks, adjunct professor of biological sciences, especially for the occasion. Kavanaugh cut on behalf of Barnes Venables, a local environmental scientist whose name was drawn for the task.

Texas Sen. Royce West and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison visited the UNT System Center at Dallas June 17 to help UNT and Paul Quinn College launch the Science and Math Teacher Academy, which will provide advanced training and instruction for fifth- and sixth-grade teachers in southern Dallas.
