On December 12, the UNT System Board of Regents voted unanimously to name Dr. Neal Smatresk president of UNT, the flagship campus of the UNT System. Smatresk, 62, will succeed V. Lane Rawlins who announced in March that he planned to retire at the end of 2013. Smatresk will join UNT February 3, 2014, after serving as president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas since 2009. Rawlins will continue in the role until that time and will become President Emeritus at UNT upon his retirement.
The UNT System Board of Regents named Dr. Neal Smatresk the sole finalist for the UNT presidency. Smatresk is currently the president at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. If confirmed after a required minimum 21-day period, Smatresk will become UNT's 16th president, succeeding President V. Lane Rawlins who is retiring.
