Sacred Rock Carvings

Carving Devotion in the Jain Caves at Ellora bookcoverLisa N. Owen, assistant professor of art history, writes about the rock-cut site of Ellora in Maharashtra, India, in Carving Devotion in the Jain Caves at Ellora (Brill).

The caves were carved in the 6th through 10th centuries for Hindu, Buddhist and Jain devotional practices. Owen analyzes art historical and textual evidence to better understand how this medium transforms a mountain into a space for religious activities.

Her book is considered the first full-scale reconstruction of the medieval artistic and devotional practices at the site.
