Neal Smatresk begins tenure as UNT's 16th president

Neal SmatreskDear Alum,

Today I began serving you as the 16th president of the University of North Texas. I want to thank Chancellor Jackson and the UNT System Board of Regents for their confidence in selecting me for the task. I am excited about the road that lies ahead and humbled by the responsibility of leading our great university into the next phase of its evolution.

Our 124-year foundation is strong, and I am committed to working with you, our campus community and the greater North Texas region to further build UNT's reputation as a nationally prominent university -- a first choice institution for students, faculty and staff.

In the coming weeks and months, I hope to see many of you at UNT events and throughout the community. Our alumni network is a vital part of our success, and as a network, you can help our current students make the transition to the job market. In addition to working with our alumni groups, I will arrange meetings with all major academic and administrative units on campus so our faculty and staff can get to know me and I can better understand where we are, the challenges we face, and where we hope to go. I also will meet with regional leaders to make sure they know we are dedicated partners in building a prosperous future. While there are certainly challenges ahead, I know that our strong leadership team and campus community are up to the task.

Finally, I want to thank you for the warm welcome Debbie and I received from the UNT and North Texas communities over the past month. If you see us on campus or out in the community, please stop and say hello so we can get to know you better! The family feel of our Mean Green community and your enthusiasm for our future are infectious, and I know we will go far together.

UNT proud,
Neal Smatresk
President, University of North Texas
