Mabel DickinsonMabel Dickinson (’55, ’68 M.L.S.) celebrated her 100th birthday in July. She spent nearly 40 years as a public school librarian, but often tells stories of her time at UNT. Her daughter, Emily Ladd, says her mom worked on her degrees in the summer while the children lived in Denver City. “We would go to see her on the weekends and she would tell us how much she loved the work she got to do and how much she enjoyed the people. She also would talk about how she had to write everything out for the card catalogs by hand.” Dickinson’s best advice to college students: “Always go to class!” These days she’s also giving advice when it comes to living a long life. Her children say her secret is reading, being around people and keeping busy. They say it also doesn’t hurt that she never smoked or drank alcohol.
