UNT and Texas Woman’s University have expanded their dual degree offerings to allow students to pursue a degree in materials science and engineering from UNT paired with a TWU math or chemistry degree in four years. Initially, the program allowed students to earn a bachelor's in mathematics from TWU and a bachelor's in electrical engineering from UNT. The College of Engineering also is developing a dual degree option for students interested in mechanical and energy engineering. This year, Katie Schniebs (’11) became the first student to graduate under the original joint program, earning her bachelor’s degrees from both UNT and TWU, and earned a NASA internship.
The program, which began in 2007, grew out of a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation which included funding for scholarships to attract women and ethnic minorities to the UNT College of Engineering. And now Siemens is providing scholarship funds to the program.
