Dark Shadows

Before Harry Potter, Twilight and True Blood, there was Dark Shadows, the gothic daytime soap that aired on ABC from 1966 to 1971.
In the book Dark Shadows (Wayne State University Press), Harry M. Benshoff examines the show during its initial run and as a continuing cult phenomenon that paved the way for today’s popular fantasy franchises with vampires, werewolves and love triangles. Benshoff, associate professor of radio, television and film, explores the context of the mid-1960s that gave rise to the show, the writers’ adaptation of gothic novels and horror films, and the subsequent novels, records, games, comic books and feature films based on the show.
